The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) was a species of large bear native to Europe and Asia through the ice age.

Physical appearance and biologyEdit

Cave bears looked very similar to regular brown bears, but were larger and more muscular. Unlike some brown bear subspecies, they did not have fatty humps on their backs. They also exhibited major sexual dimorphism, as the female of the species was much smaller than the male.

Behaviour and traitsEdit

Like most other bears, cave bears were generalist feeders, eating berries and vegetation, as well as scavenging carrion, and presumably killing smaller animals. In winter months, they would hibernate in caves, like modern bears.

A Mammoth UndertakingEdit

Whilst exploring Holocene Siberia, Nigel Marven comes across a cave, and decides to investigate it. He accidentally disturbs a sleeping cave bear, which chases him through the forest, eventually giving up after he climbs a tree. Nigel returns to the cave later on to observe the bear, remarking that it would soon be extinct.

Behind the scenesEdit

Cave bears were not as large and powerful as depicted in Prehistoric Park: in fact, they are believed to have been smaller than present-day brown bears.
